Owl and the Sparrow (Cú và chim se sẻ, 2007) — It's the story of a runaway girl who befriends a zookeeper and a flight attendant as she struggles to survive on the streets of Saigon. It's a great film — sad, sweet, and moving — and the little girl is simply adorable.

Finally watched Skyfall. I liked it a lot. I'm usually not too into action movies, but this was great all the way through.

^ Yeah, definitely!

I recently watched a Korean comic action movie called "The Thieves." About some, er, thieves getting together for ONE LAST JOB to steal a rare and valuable diamond from a hotel. It was really well made and fun. And Jun Ji Hyun, damn it's really kind of ridiculous for someone to be THAT good looking.

Tokyo Species (TOKYO スピーシーズ, 2012) — Take the basic premise of Species, set it in Tokyo with a MUCH smaller budget, replace Natasha Henstridge with AV superstar Ozawa Maria in a schoolgirl uniform, and this is what you get.

Tetsujin 28 (鉄人28号) — 2005 live-action film about the giant robot known as Gigantor here in the States. The cast includes Abe Hiroshi, Aoi Yū, and our beloved Nakazawa Yūko as a police detective. There's even a brief appearance by Noppon.

Never saw that before. I really dig Abe though, so gotta put it on my list. Thanks for the mention!

That's Tetsujin 28-go, btw.

^ The title on the cover of the American DVD release is simply Tetsujin 28, no , so that's why I wrote it that way. Netflix has it on DVD.

I watched Looper and Alex Cross today. I enjoyed Alex Cross, maybe I'll read the books someday, but Looper just confused me.

Shinobido (2012) - another Japanese ninja movie that has a good mixture of trademark Japanese ninja movie elements and new stuff. On one hand, the action is kept within human limits with limited help from wires and fairly serious acting among the actors. Think the Rurouni Kenshin live action movie and you'll get the picture. On the other, you still get the usual doses of characters in trademark ninja garb (black over-alls wearing a bandana...you know what I mean) and some fan-service - like the lead heroine Oko (played by Aimi Satsukawa) being obviously lusted by a fellow female ninja (played by ex-AKB48 member Ayaka Kikuchi).

I had a good time watching the movie. It didn't give me the thrills I felt while watching Rurouni Kenshin or 13 Assassins but still manages to deliver in its own little way.

Sandakan No. 8 (サンダカン八番娼館 望郷) (1974) — A young female journalist meets an old woman who had been sold into prostitution at an early age to be a karayuki-san in Borneo, and she stays with the old woman in her run-down shack to learn her story.
