I think that argument is slightly flawed.

Karen is (presumably) one person, so she only has to sell a fraction of what a group sells to be as cost effective. (Of course if Karin is a group then your theory is fine.)

Karen's first album Karen no Enka ga Ippai charted first week at 186 with 800 sales. Her second album Karen no Enka ga Ippai 2 didn't chart on Oricon at all and as such has functionally no sales for us to even attempt to keep track of.
Granted, she also gets basically zero promotion beyond her own roaming the streets singing into a mic, so I guess there's that trade-off.

There's plenty of multi-girl groups who manage to do way worse than H!P groups, and they still exist
