They seem to enforce and neglect that rule whenever they have felt like it. Even going as far back as 5th gen they bought in Niigaki who was in another audition and did work for Tomy appearing in commercials.

Honestly the whole idea of fresh faces only is just silly if they are talented and fit it shouldn't matter where they come from. Even if they were in say an indies idol group before and joined it wouldn't be a big deal.

No, there was a reason for it, back in the beginning. They were supposed to be the "girls next door" who broke through on pure talent and personality, rather than years of polish and training, and that in turn was supposed to appeal to other normal girls and increase the mainstream audience.

But yeah, those days are long past. Now they're fighting dozens of other groups just to stay in the top five.

might it not also depend on the circumstances surrounding their contracts? maybe they are on the verge of expiring, or maybe they're more just students/trainees who get work here and there (without pay or something like that).. or maybe they even get the OK as long as their contract allows them to leave it whenever they want.

i never saw it as a particular breach of the rules. now, when a girl from Idoling!! or something is allowed to audition and win, then i'll be like "yeah, that rule is bullshit."
