Platinum and post platinum era songs (Post in red):
1. One・Two・Three - Currently my favorite Morning Musume song of all time. It's pretty much the perfect J-idol techno song. Not too Kiddy, but not TOO Kpop or mature. There's a feeling of originality in the song, but it sounds like it can keep up with it's contemporaries. It's got a coolness, not an emo-ness like Platinum Era. This is where Morning Musume needs to go, this cool-but-still-idol-fun kind of sound.2. Resonant Blue - My favorite Platinum Era song and number 3 over all. The snare drum in this song is magic, just frantic and toe tapping. The brass give it kind of a jazzy, blues feeling while still remaining in the realm of pop. The vocals are desperate, the true "Emo-musume" song, and passionate. Though a controversial song thanks to line distribution, The frantic desperation of the song really draws me in.
3. Onna ni Sachi Are - I'm a little biased toward this song, because this was the debut of my first "Oshi" ever in Momusu, but.... ONSA started Emomusume with it's pretty depressing lyrics and sad sounding singing. The true magic of this song is the instrumental, it's pulse pounding and hard hitting. With it's Techno beats, which was really the first time Momusu dwelved into the genre, and it succeeded pretty hard core. It's a dramatic song in a different way than Resonant Blue, it's dripping with Melo-Drama.
4. Nanchatte Renai - NR is a strange animal, pretty violins like SYO but not a slower tempo song like SYO, plus the whole rapping thing which shouldn't work, but really brings the whole song together. If you've ever just taken the time to listen to the instrumental, the thing is BEAUTIFUL, the voilins sound like their playing a movement, but the background of a pop song. It's different because of the sudden tempo changes and sudden key changes, which again should destroy the song but really tie it together. This song SHOULDN'T have worked, and it worked so beautifully.
5. Onna to Otoko no Lullaby Game - BUM BUMBUM. BUM BUMBUM. DAT BEGINNING. Sometimes this song makes me tear up, as I REALLY miss Eri, Jun, and Lin, but it's still fun to listen to. It's vaguely Gypsy-esque, like it could be played on a fiddle in Romania... or in a musical where they think they're Gypsies in Romania. The sound is pretty unique and it's really catchy. I prefer the album version more, but still.
6. Renai Hunter - Remember that cool-but-still-idol fun thing I was talking about? This totally started it. It's beginning draws you in IMMEDIATLY, it's instrumental is pounding and vaguely Dub Steppy with it's DROP THE BASS. I can't emphasis how COOL this whole song is, while still being fun. See, the thing that Platinum Era lacked was cool, mature songs, that were also FUN. I can criticize Plat Era for that, Renai Hunter and 123 show it's possible to be both cool and fun and injecting fun back in Morning Musume was what Renai Hunter did without being cheesy or campy or awful. Renai Hunter was where Momusu saw their new groove, 123 is where they solidified it, and, if Tsunku is smart, he'll evolve it in future singles. 7. Naichau Kamo - Is Basically 123 with all the fun sucked out of it. I don't mean it in a BAD way persay, I love the song, but it's not a fun techno song, it's a sad, poor me Techno song. Again the vocals are sad, but not desperate, they sound more like resignation, like "This is how it's always going to be, I'll always be alone". Despite the pretty awesome techno instrumental, the song sounds alone, lonely. It has some amazing parts in it, the melody is TOP NOTCH, but 123 made me release how sad this song actually sounded. I love the song though and it's fun to dance to.
8. Mikan - MIKAN is interesting to me. I didn't LOVE it when it came out, but overtime it's my go to Happy Song. It has never EVER failed to cheer me up after listening to it. It sounds so hopeful! Full of life and fun and energy. It managed to rise in my rankings and does so steady every year. That chorus, man, the sticatto may it's done, then the shout of LIFE IS ONE TIME. It really feels like the way they are singing it is reaching the audience. When I heard this song live at AX, I was in TEARS, and at the time I didn't even like the song that much. It reached me with it's hopeful energy and that feeling never left me.
9. Shouganai Yume Oibito - One of the only slower tempo'd songs MM has ever done, and probably the closest thing they came to a Ballad in Platinum Era. The instrumental is pretty fast, but the singing is slow and melodic like a ballad. It's sad, about a girl being sad in college (As an aside; I wish Tsunku would have written a happy song about how awesome it is to be an adult or whatever, come on man, it's not that bad
). The melody of the lyrics actually carry this song, the instrumental is okay, especially during the bridge, but it's, at times, a bit empty. The melody is so amazing, just genius work.
10. Kimagure Princess KP was a decent attempt at fun and cool, but it fell a little short. I love the Russian influence of the song and is honestly the best example Plat Era has of "Cool-but-Fun idol" and maybe even the ONLY example. It's campy, but not cheesy, it's fun but not over the top, and it's cool, but not emo. Even the instrumental is top notch. I think it falls short was the fact the girls didn't really sing it like they were having fun. They sang it VERY mature and like they would a sadder song. I know it's about a chick who's too picky or whatever, but I'd like to have heard some more energetic lines and I think it would have MADE the song. Great song though.
11. Only you From here on I add a bit more criticism. Only You tried to repeat the Emo-momusu sound with a new lineup - with the violins, the more serious lyrics, playing it completely cool, etc - and it didn't really work. Riho's young and untrained voice didn't pull off sounding sad at all, she just kinda sounded monotone and bored. The veterans of course, pulled it off, but Riho just wasn't ready for this kind of song yet. The song as a whole is a bit disjointed, especially the weird verses then the super different chorus. It doesn't work as well as Nanchatte Renai did. Gaki is a revelation in this though, her part is just spectacular. I like the song, though. (As a aside: I watched all the videos as I did these reviews and holy cow 9th gen has grown!)12. Maji Desu ka Suka - Has a bit of an advantage with me because I love Ska music so... Also, the line distribution is so amazing it made me like the song better, take note Tsunku. The sound is VERY ska, mixed in with some pop idol elements, it's fun but not cheesy. You can skank to it, which is plus points to it. I don't like the instrumental as much as I thought because the brass section - an important part of ska - just isn't as prominent as it should me. They are there, but they aren't loud enough . Also the song was, and still is JARRING after the number of Plat Era singles that sounded nothing like this. Overall the song isn't bad, and I have little criticism for it, but it fails to catch attention that isn't "It sounds different..." and that is never a good thing. 13. Pepper Keibu - the lowest of the single's Koharu was in. Don't get me wrong I love covers, but I never was a big fan of the song. Now if they would have done a WINK song I would have died. I like that they updated the instrumental to go along with the style of Platinum Era. The line distribution was the BEST of Plat Era. That's it, not much to say on this one. OH the dance break was SO COOL.
14. Seishun Collection - I think Seishun Collection gets a bit of a bad wrap, it's not AS BAD as people like to make it out to be. It, of course, has those violins Plat Era is known for and is a nice relaxing song. The video biases me a little bit, because in it they look almost like a Family, like... this is the happiest and most together I've ever seen them. The way they sing it really reflects it, just a nice content sound of happiness, without being overly energetic or cheesy. The problem with the song is it's a bit lackluster, it's not memorable and would have been more suited to a Bside or album song.
15. Onna ga Medatte Naze Ikenai - The thing I hate most about this song is the instrumental. After countless flawless instrumentals with real instruments or awesome techo tracks, OGMNI comes in with a Casio keyboard sounding thing that was probably done in someone's basement. I can hear a guitar, but it needs to be louder or something, I don't know, the squeaky nonsense and drum machine over power it. The fiddle break was the coolest thing about it. As for the song itself, the chorus is good, I feel like the verses are a bit boring. I can listen to it, and enjoy pieces of it, but overall it's just okay.
16. The Matenrou Show- The Mantenrou Show is Kono Chikyuu's spiritual successor, but it's a bit more mature and funky. It has more funk influences than the Kono, and I feel it's more in line with the "Cool-but-Fun" image that seems to be the thing right now. It's a nice song, but I'm not the biggest fan of his disco tunes. HOWEVER, I feel like this one can go up on the list eventually. With it's use of real, awesome instruments and a cool, though disco, instrumental and it's AWESOME melody. 17. Kono Chikyuu no Heiwa wo Honki de Negatterun da yo! - Ugh I wish the title was shorter, but whatever. Disco Disco Disco, which Tsunku calls Funky, which I guess it can be, but Funk it a much more bass (The instrument) heavy genre. He hasn't really realized disco is dead, maybe he will someday. We can only hope. The like how it turns into a different song in the chorus, a song that is SUPER catchy. Also, Gaki , once again just owns her lines so much it's hard to hate them. I don't have much to say about this one, it's okay. It's not bad. 18. Kare to Issho Omise ga Shitai - It tries too hard to be Golden Era musume, but I love the guitar. 19. PyokoPyoko Ultra - No.
