There are still girls who want to be the next ayaka, miwa or Nishino Kana who take part in idol auditions. In that way, applicants aren't that different from 10 years ago even though the idol scene is obviously bigger and there are more girls who want to be career idols thanks to the 48 boom. Some girls just want to be singers, models or actresses and have no particular interest in idoling, but they may be more likely to aim for 48 and avex groups instead.
Just look at the current MM members. It's obvious Ikuta and Fukumura wanted to be career idols by looking at the way they are marketing themselves, but what about the others? Sayashi's lifelong dream was to join MM, Ayumin is an idol fan who was a backdancer for another idol group and Kudou as well as Odasaku were H!P fans even before joining H!P Kenshuusei. On the other hand, I don't think Maachan's interest in idoling was any stronger than Konno Asami's before joining, and I don't think 12-year-old Zukki was a super huge H!P fan although her mother was. Judging from Iikubo's comments, she is more of a Sayu fan than a H!P fan and the former teen model might be the most career-minded member MM has had since Koharu. It doesn't make them less better than the other girls, but they are not just idol fans who want to become idols.
