Turkey politically may be part of Europe, through NATO and EU treaties, but geographically and culturally it is part of the Middle East.
Also, there's a lot more to Russia than what's west of the Ural Mountains.
I think what Starra meant is that both Turkey and Russia straddle Europe and Asia geographically, all political and cultural considerations aside. Turkey has that European bit west of the Bosporus, though most of the country's territory is in Asia (the Anatolian peninsula, Asia Minor, the original Asia).
