I don't know if they're serious, but that's what they say at the beginning: since they've both turned 20 (Chinami's birthday was May 22), they want to try living alone (一人暮らし).

Though they're not going to find much that fits Captain's stated budget of 80,000 yen per month. Not in Tokyo.

I'm looking for a new place myself, and I wish I had choices like those. Living in a Midwestern university town like I do, there seems to be only two types of apartments here: small and crappy (for students and service workers), or big and nice (for professionals and university faculty). After all of my uncluttering, I don't really have much stuff anymore, so I want something small and nice. No such luck.

Tokyo prices really are insane. You pay well over $1000 for a one room studio apartment that is tiny with a tiny bathroom. Where i live in England i have a small apartment that is double the size of those Japanese studio apartments and i pay the equvilant of about $520 a month. Though it'd be way more expensive to live in a city.

I think the USA has much cheaper housing than the UK does. You can buy a big house in most states for almost half of what you pay for a 2 bedroomed house here.

my friends apartment in tokyo was 70000, but maybe she was just very lucky.
