rank does matter. its what gets them noticed and on TV more.

Rank matters, but not so much in Oricon. It's ignorant to think the Japanese public doesn't realize that CD singles are padded now to increase sales. What I think really matters is the digital charts, that's where you get the real numbers. Oricon is just another means of free promotion to the company these days. You get high on the chart, it's something the news talks about for a minute.
If they can increase their sales and stay relevant for more than a second after the release day, I'll call it a win.

Actually his last single only sold 108k the first week, so all hope is not lost. But the one before that sold 145k the first week. We'll find out. Who knows, maybe Morning Musume's sales for this single will blow all previous ones out of the water.

Won't the sales be much less because the handshake events will not be counted towards Oricon?

actually now that I think of it, with oricon getting more strict on sales, it may actually reflect better now, aside from all those wota buying 100's of copies.
I'm sure we'll see a difference this time around, too.
-edit-
resop, I think if you buy the single, and it has that raffle thing inside, it's fine... I think it's just if you buy cd's at concerts that's not counted. (I could be wrong, but that's what I understood)

^ CDs bundled with concert tickets are not counted by Oricon. EXILE used to sell CDs with concert tickets, which led the same single to reappear at the top of the oricon various times and even beat AKB48 in the year ranking.
For H!P, CDs under a major label aren't sold at concerts (indie singles are). However, they are sold and counted during release week (buy the single and receive a ticket for our release event) since it's sold by a eligible vendor (ex: HMV, Tower Records, Shinseisdo, etc). Afterwards, it's sold by UF, which Oricon won't count.
Edit: more specific.

I'd like to add, since amped didn't mention it, and I just found it on
Arama!Japan. This is for Fukuyama Masaharu's 25th anniversary, 2 years since his last single. This is a big one.

well I appreciate that we got to see a concert preview of Oh my Wish.
obviously its just a short preview and the real MV will be even better.

I do not mind if Fukuyama Masaharu get #1 and MM get #2. I do mind when other idols or LDH groups get #1 and MM get #2.

yeah thats a good point, technically they're biggest competition is other idols, it would be nice though if they could be just as good as AKB in competing with the big names
