move out of the midwest. :hehe:
</mean>

no but seriously, they don't skip over the mid-west just because, they skip over it because there is no concentrated population large enough to make it worthwhile for their current level of popularity (which still is classified as obscure considering we're a niche-within-a-niche). i can see them maybe going to Texas one day because of the number of large cities in close proximity, which was the same benefit of going to New England (though imo Somerset was not the best choice).

then again, it all depends on the experience they had between Anime Expo, Sakura-Con and AnimeNEXT. perhaps they would prefer to be a returning guest with one or more of these places because it has worked out so far. perhaps they are testing the waters with different areas of the country and so may continue to do so. perhaps they are unhappy with their experiences and so will seek out somewhere else to make their appearances.

perhaps they have a totally new idea in store. i just can never say for sure when it comes to Up-Front. :lol:

Anyone who says that doesn't appreciate just how large Chicago is, nor how many other large cities (Milwaukee, Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, St. Louis, Des Moines, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Louisville, etc.) are within driving distance of it.

I would say that it's also more of a bitch for them to get to the midwest... Seattle, LA, they're both international airports with non-stop flights from Tokyo. I don't think Chicago has that luxury.

Though, I guess NJ couldn't have, either...

:facepalm:

Chicago is a hub for both American and United. There are non-stop flights for both of them, as well as for JAL and a few others.

Hell, there are non-stop flights between Tokyo and Detroit, because of the auto industry and because Detroit is a Delta (formerly Northwest) hub.

I've flown from Minneapolis to Narita on the way to Thailand, so yeah, airline isn't an issue.

I think there aren't big J-Pop/anime/Japanese conventions around here, but I could be wrong.

Whoa, I had no idea! I guess I had assumed they would need to refuel. :wacko:

It's not as far as it seems, when you remember that they follow great circle flight paths. Starting from Tokyo (NRT), Chicago (ORD) is only 823 miles farther than Los Angeles (LAX).

oh, well then i guess it's just coincidence that California and New York/New England have more large events than other places. :lol:

No, it's not a coincidence. They simply suffer from the same ignorance of the Midwest that you guys do, but on a larger scale. You guys at least know that New York City isn't a country…

:hehe:

Regarding great circle routes, I just remembered those are only the raw mathematics. The actual flights are about the same length, since they both follow the main international flight path over the Aleutian Islands and then split only when they reach Alaska or British Columbia. From there, NRT-LAX goes south and NRT-ORD goes east.
