The managers most likely have year or 6 months contracts. I've noticed that many managers have gone to/from Yoshizawa and Ishikawa for some reason. However, the manager should have a much more impact on the group than just being the personal assistant.
For MM it was the manager who told them to not use make-up early on, for example. They're very much in charge of how the idol is presented to the media and the fans.

A top example of this is SMAP's chief manager Iijima Michi. She - just like any other chief manager in the business - would have the last word in terms of managers etc. She is the reason for SMAP's success and she's also managing Yamashita "Yamapi" Tomohisa and Kis-my-ft2 these days which explains their sudden appearances in SMAP dramas and especially Kis-my-ft2's sudden popularity.
Because they have good managers.

I know this was just a "regular manager" change though. Just pointing it out there that the manager, while not the top head of the company or producer or anything - have quite a big role in any and everything.

A good manager could/should show in success for the group. Of course if you have TV networks hating on you it would be difficult, but not impossible.

Tsunku is a producer. Not a manager.

Sorry to burst your bubbles, but there is a lot he doesn't do.
He writes lyrics, maybe even funds some as executive producer (doubt it though) - but when it comes to what you see, how they are marketed, the shows they are on and radio shows they get- probably even line distribution - those are managerial duties.

He's the producer and so he has the final call when it comes to a lot of stuff. The executive, Yamazaki or whatever his name is, would have the absolute final call on everything, but Tsunku IS the one who decides a lot. He is the one (while consulting with the executive of course) who chooses the girls for example. Also he's the one who decides (probably while consulting the choreographer) whether to add/remove things from dances. And setlists for concerts etc (probably also with the managers though) is something that he does, too.
Line distribution is definitely Tsunku's table. He is in there during the whole mixdown process too. He's talked about it both once and twice.

As far as PR and radio/TV/concert and such goes though, that's the actual management department, no doubt. But there's most likely no way that Tsunku does not know about it. He obviously wouldn't keep track of who's where at what date doing what concert. But he has a lot to do with pretty much everything.

The executive, Yamazaki or whatever his name is

Naoki Yamazaki, the president (and probably largest shareholder) of UF*. He's listed as executive producer on every H!P release, and he makes all of the big decisions (albeit with input from his daughter Yukako, whom he's grooming to take over, as well as from Tsunku and the senior managers). When Kago talked about how "the boss" cried when he had to fire her, she meant Yamazaki.

^ and recently it looked like Tsunku also have final say on how the music video is edited. Remember how Wakuteka's MV took several rounds of final editing becoz Tsunku was not happy with the end result.
