To be fair, it apparently is really hot in Japan at the moment. It makes sense having short hair if you're an idol. With long hair, it can get really heavy during the summer and can make your neck all sweaty and gross. Plus, not to mention, taking care of it is so much easier when it's short. It doesn't take as long (heh) to wash, dry, brush, etc etc.

Long hair is a pain in the ass. It looks really pretty (on most people), but I don't blame these girls for cutting it. It's inconvenient.
