(And as someone who doesn't follow J=J much, how is the Karin fanbase? Is it as big as one would expect for her to get her own (mini) tour? Like, if Airi had gotten this during the C-ute days it would've made sense in part because I have context of the Airi fanbase.)

Yes. If we allow that Morning Musume is still the flagship group of H!P, and if we allow that ANGERME and Juice=Juice now have roughly the same roles in H!P (relative to Morning Musume) that Berryz Kobo and ℃-ute did before, then Karin absolutely is the Airi of today's H!P. It might not be super obvious to more casual fans since Juice=Juice is full of great vocalists, but Karin has always been the ace of that group. Also, her character and personality are similar to Airi's.

Yeah, I know it's not a perfect analogy, especially since we also have Kobushi Factory, Tsubaki Factory, and so on. H!P as a whole is much larger now than it was even just a few years ago — and one side effect of that is they're starting to push Manaka as a second ace of Juice=Juice, since the group is now large enough to support a second ace (as oxymoronic as that sounds).

Today at the H!P Summer concert 2019 "beautiful" at Orix Theater in Osaka, the 6 new H!P members got to participate for the first time with everyone in the last song, Ai no Gundan.

MM 19 - Kitagawa, Okamura, Yamazaki -> were dancing on stage. Reports say they got the dance down perfectly such as the "Honto, Honto" shoulder move while jumping part.
