Female lead tends to have romantic involvement with male lead. I think that's what they're trying to avoid, at least officially for this question.

I never really considered that, either. We've had other questions like this and it always struck me how many of them want to be the "best friend".
That said, the lead's best friend is usually a really fun character, so that's why I figured they were going that route, whereas the lead is usually pretty formulaic.
